Newsletter 12/22

Dear customer,

At the end of the year we would like to thank you for the trust you have placed in us, but also for the great, inspiring cooperation. We say goodbye to the new year with some news:

Insulation cell pads in car batteries - application-oriented characterization

In the past few months, we have received an increasing number of inquiries about the thermal characterization of insulation materials for use in EV batteries. The cell pads are installed between the individual battery cells and are intended to protect the neighboring cells from the high temperatures of the defective cell at a thermal runaway event.

In order to be able to characterize and test the cell pads even better and in an application-oriented manner in the future, we are currently designing a new thermal test bench, the Thermal Propagation Tester (TPT). With this the real installation situation of the cell pads in the battery can be simulated and a thermal runaway can be simulated. The aim is to determine the thermal properties of the cell pads transiently and thus to include all relevant effects, such as the melting or evaporation of individual components or mechanical compression.

In addition to the transient thermal properties, which can be used to compare materials or as input variables for battery simulations, the new measurement method also provides very practical information: the temperature profile over time on the cold side of the material. It is thus possible to assess which temperature affects the intact cell to be protected.

We are inviting all interested customers and business partners to an online meeting in early 2023 to present the measurement method and to discuss relevant installation and operating conditions.

Start of the ZFW Academy '23

Our ZFW Academy`23 starts in January with the following modules, which are currently taking place online from 8:15 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.:

Module 01 - Physical Basics I+II, 17.+18. January 2023

Physical basics: heat transport through heat conduction, convection and heat radiation. Thermal contact resistance, heat spread. Simple basic equations for rough calculations. Illustrating the theory with practical examples.

Module 02 - Overview of Cooling Strategies in Electronics, January 25, 2023

Heat dissipation on package, substrate and system level, passive heat dissipation through spreading effect, definition of Rth values, Zth and pulse Zth curve, meaning in practice, typical packages and their heat paths, printed circuit boards (standard, flex, semi-flex, Microvia and inlay technology, thick copper, special solutions), selection and installation of fans and heat pipes, evaluation of heat paths from the junction to the environment.
