Vibration tests with thermally conductive pastes



To improve heat dissipation in power electronics, conventional heat-conducting pastes are often used - a mixture of a viscous, non-crosslinking base substance (e.g. silicone oil) and heat-conducting particles made of ceramic or metal.


During operation, however, vibrations can lead to segregation: The paste separates into solid and liquid components and the oil escapes. This phenomenon is known as the bleed-out effect. Not only are the thermal properties of the paste impaired, but its service life can also be significantly shortened as a result - up to and including the failure of the entire power electronics.


We use our vibration tester to specifically test thermal conductive pastes for “bleeding out” - under the following boundary conditions:

  • Maximum frequency: 200 Hz
  • Maximum peak-to-peak amplitude: 95 µm (up to 50 Hz frequency)
  • Temperature: 150 °C
